​We understand – your rug is a beloved piece of your home and you want what’s best for it. More importantly, you want to find someone you can trust to who cares about your rug just as much as you do. Our rug cleaning service is more than just a quick shampoo and tumble dry. It’s a proprietary, cleaning process individualized to provide the best cleaning and care for your rug. No two rugs are alike, which means no two cleanings are alike. Read on to learn why our process makes all the difference in the outcome of your rug.

Evaluation. Every cleaning begins with a complimentary evaluation in the comfort of your own home. Before we review the rug itself, we will discuss its age, history, fabric style, and more. If you don’t know the history of your rug, don’t worry! We are well equipped to determine the age of your rug and the fabric type during our examination. During this initial meeting, we will also discuss your expectations for your piece.

Then, our trained experts will examine every inch of your rug. We’ll look for staining, color bleed, fading, odors, and areas that are worn or in disrepair. We’ll also carefully examine the fabric to ensure it is consistent with your description. This is especially important in antique pieces where information may be lost or misunderstood as it is often passed down orally. Once we’ve assessed the rug we’ll share our findings with you. Our clients often see one glaring issue, and we see other issues during an assessment. Just as a car mechanic can tell you when your brakes need to be replaced or a belt is about to go out, we can point out issues that may not be visible to the untrained eye. Our assessments often catch early signs of wear and tear, color fading, or mildew. By identifying these problems early on and discussing a plan of action, we can prevent and sometimes even reverse the condition before it causes permanent damage to your rug.

Once we know your expectations and your rug’s condition, we provide a personalized plan and quote. Each care plan’s primary goal is to preserve the integrity of your rug. Whether you need a simple dry clean or, a thorough washing and stain removal, or detailed repair and restoration, we will give you an honest assessment and plan of action. Once we’ve agreed on a care plan, we take the rug to our shop to start the cleaning process. In many cases, we can transport the rug on the same day as the assessment and get started right away.

Pre-Treat. In centuries past, pre-treating a rug simply meant taking it out to the clothesline to “beat” the dust and dirt out of it. Thankfully, technology has made the pre-treat process better – no “beater” required! Our professional service begins with another quick assessment in our shop, followed by a pre-clean treatment. This is when we will pre-treat stains and use special tools to loosen dust and dirt. Rugs that can withstand water submersion may also be treated to a special “spa session” to remove deep-seated dirt and dust.

Hand-Washing. While some rugs (such as Chinese silk) are dry cleaned, most of our pieces go through our hand-washing process. Each rug gets a customized combination of solvents and treatments that helps remove stubborn dust, dirt, and grime while preserving your rug’s color. This alone often restores dull colors and stiff fabrics to their original beauty!

Drying.  When you think of drying, do you picture high temperatures and commercial dryers, or do you imagine a sagging clothes line with water dripping off the rug?
Drying is a vital step that less experienced rug cleaners can overlook. Everything from the temperature to the way the rug is rolled affects the shape of the piece. Drying is just as important as washing, and if a rug is dried incorrectly it can affect the color or result in a stiff or misshapen rug. This is why we have several options for the drying process. Silk rugs are wrung dry, while sturdier rugs get a ride in our high-powered spin machine. Rather than heat-drying the rug, this machine works like the spin cycle of a washing machine; it pulls water from the rug, resulting in a piece that dries quickly while maintain its shape and form. 

Additional Services. Rugs that need complementary treatments such as color retouching, fabric repair, or other restoration needs are sent to our restoration team. They’ll meticulously work with your piece to address any issues that may detract from your rug’s function and beauty. Often, their work is so seamless it’s impossible to see where the original work ends and theirs begins!

Quality Inspection. The cleaning process isn’t done until we’re satisfied that we’ve done our best. Once your rug has been cleaned and dried, we go over every inch of it again. And while we are certainly celebrating great improvements like restored color and more supple fabric, we’re also looking for any areas that still need care. If anything does not meet our standards, we start the process over to ensure the rug returns to you in the best condition possible.
